Assistant Coach - Men's Basketball

Primary Function: The Assistant Coach supports the head coach in the leadership and organization for all aspects of the Basketball program, including monitoring both the academic and social development of the student-athletes and observing, evaluating, and recruiting student-athletes.  The Assistant Coach is responsible for following the University’s coaching guidelines and expectations including the rules and regulations of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Frontier Conference

 

Essential Functions:

 

Coaching Duties:

  • Recruit new student-athletes to the program from Junior Colleges, High Schools, and 4-year transfers.
  • Follows all rules and regulations from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as well as the Frontier Conference
  • Assists the Head Coach in issuing equipment to athletes.
  • Assists Head Coach in providing accurate information to compile eligibility lists and other reports.
  • Meets with athletes to discuss all rules and regulations, with specific emphasis on the Athletic Code.
  • Instructs players on the rules of the game, rule changes, new developments, and innovative ideas.
  • Plans and executes preseason conditioning routines for student-athletes.
  • Provides training direction, encouragement, motivation, and nutritional advice to prepare athletes for games and competitive events.
  • Plans, organizes and conducts practice sessions
  • Plans and directs physical conditioning programs that will enable athletes to achieve maximum performance.
  • Evaluates athletes' skills and review performance records to determine their fitness and potential in a particular area of athletics.
  • Makes travel and lodging arrangements for away games.  Emphasizes safety precautions; be aware of best training procedures and injury preventative actions.
  • May drive players to and from games.

 

Administrative Duties:

  • Track student-athlete’s progress in the classroom to ensure graduation.
  • Assists Head Coach with equipment by taking inventory and ensuring safe return, storage, and insurance coverage.
  • Assists with Annual Budget.
  • Reports on team as required by Head Coach &/or Athletic Director.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or related field preferred.

 

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years successful competitive coaching experience required;
  • Coaching experience at the collegiate level preferred.

 

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to teach techniques associated with sport.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and the ability to represent the interests of the University in a professional manner.
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Ability to motivate and contribute to building a positive and productive team.
  • Requires the ability to maintain strict level of confidentiality in the handling of student’s academic records and health information.
  • Ability to travel and work a varying schedule to meet competition and recruiting needs.
  • Ability to lift over 50 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record to be insured by the University’s insurance carrier.

 

Computer Skills: N/A

 

Certificates & Licenses:  CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

  • Frequently stands, walks, bends, and other movements for long periods of time.  Minimal sitting. 
  • Travel 50% of the time.
