A Brief Overview
The House Supervisor (HS) has the authority/accountability as the administrative representative/resource to provide direction, system expertise, decisions, resources, and leadership to ensure uninterrupted hospital operations. This is accomplished through the appropriate horizontal and vertical direct communication with all departments and department leaders, outside facilities, and other disciplines as appropriate.
Essential Functions
- BED MANAGEMENT- Leads and coordinates the clinical operational activities of the organization to ensure proper placement of patients, adhering to patient placement guidelines.
- Assures the continuous and timely availability of emergency, inpatient, and operative services to patients and families.
- Continuously monitors daily operations integrating data from electronic systems, personal communication, and physical and nursing engagement to assure patient care effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction.
- Assures the safety and quality of patient care by allocating and redirecting resources, considering care demands related to acuity, patient and unit requirements, and staff skill mix.
- Coordinates the routine flow of scheduled, direct, and emergency patient admissions to efficiently place patients in the appropriate care location, maximize capacity, and improve satisfaction of patients, families, and referring providers.
- Coordinates the organizational response during times of high census: collaborating with Administration, unit leadership, and ancillary service departments.
- Provides equipment, and technology resources necessary for the provision of safe, high quality patient and family care.
- Coordinates the response to significant, planned or unplanned events that threaten the institutions people, structures, ability to operate, assets and/or reputation.
- Proactively identifies potentially negative or volatile situations and intervenes to offset adverse impact.
- Provides direction and assistance in significant events by anticipating needs, analyzing situations, and assuring availability of resources.
- Supports and directs staff to safely manage patient care through planned and unplanned electronic system, telephone, and other system downtimes. Responds to requests for information from previous care providers, referring facilities, and others as needed. Functions as the initial on-site incident commander for internal / external disasters or other major events.
- Upon arrival of the administrator on-call, assumes the role of patient / bed tracking manager or other roles as assigned.
- STAFFING RESOURCE Responsible to provide resources for clinical and support staff in decision making that facilitates safe, high quality patient care.
- Applies knowledge of regulatory standards, professional practice standards, and organizational policies and procedures to problem solving.
- Provides education, guidance, and assistance with unfamiliar procedures and policies; while assisting staff to identify resources for information and assistance.
- Promotes a professional culture of learning consistent with successful adaptation to change and innovation by actively seeking and sharing information.
- Participates in organizational committees in order to both represent inter-department perspectives and contribute to organizational improvement efforts,
- Makes a measurable commitment to personal professional development (conferences, leadership classes, hospital leadership educational offerings).
- Provides leadership for effective communication and collaboration between disparate stakeholders to achieve the common goal of safe, high quality patient care.
- Communicates effectively at all levels, role modeling a professional approach with all situations and individuals, even when faced with disagreement or conflict.
- Promotes a positive work environment by building trust and strengthening relationships with staff within and between units.
- Uses a problem solving approach to find creative solutions for both routine and complex situations that require intervention to assure appropriate resource allocation. Strives to develop mutually supportive professional relationships with department managers, Clinical Managers, and Charge Nurses.
- Partners with patient care areas on initiatives that improve patient care quality and safety, nursing process, education, and research.
- Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

- Accepts assignments to share/teach knowledge and provide clinical support as a preceptor/resource for new staff.
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or healthcare administration Required
Experience Qualifications
- Minimum of three (3) years nursing experience required, preferably in pediatrics Required and
- Minimum 1 year supervisory or lead experience Required

- Must possess leadership skills in verbal/written communication and organizational management (time management, problem solving, conflict resolution, and knowledge of regulatory agency/HR standards).
- Must possess influential/motivational leadership skills that drive/develops staff performance.
- Ability to effectively demonstrate situational power, control, autonomy, and flexibility.
- Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritizing skills.
Licenses and Certifications
- RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Required and
- BCLS - Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association Required and
- PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Required
