Job Title:  Educational Technician 4, Special Education 

 

Location: Teacher Administrative Center, 3215 Cuming St. Omaha, NE 68131

 

Reports To: Director of Special Education

 

Work Schedule/FLSA Status:  Full-time 12-month  / Hourly Non-Exempt

 

Salary Schedule:  This is a negotiated position.  Wages are administered consistent with the negotiated agreement. 

Salary grade 36F starts at $22.09/hour.

 

Position Purpose:  To assist the Special Education Division in maintaining compliance by accurately entering special education-related data as well as assisting in providing high-quality customer services to families.

 

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the enrollment process for incoming special education referrals; follow up with families, medical professionals, and/or caseworkers to ensure timely completion of necessary forms and documents for enrollment.
  • Log various student enrollment and placement information into appropriate databases.
  • Perform various duties in preparation for, execution of, and follow-up to the enrollment or transition of students from one placement to another, including maintaining class lists, notifying school teams, and arranging transportation.

  •  

    Answer telephone and greet public and school personnel using tact and courtesy.
  • Assist with maintaining various files and folders, routing copies of materials to individuals, and maintaining schedules and calendars.
  • Log various student enrollment and placement information into appropriate databases.
  • Process student files for placement by proofing and mailing letters and forms.
  • Open and sort interdepartmental and U.S. mail.
  • Perform various duties in preparing for, executing, and following students' transition from one placement to another, including maintaining and sharing class lists, arranging transportation, and transferring cumulative folders.
  • Maintain office supplies and forms and assists with preparation of annual orders.
  • Prepare requisitions for approval and order and distribute supplies to students and teachers.
  • Work with various persons on the maintenance of computer files.
  • Load student information to the data manager system and sort and print as needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma and/or equivalency.
  • Previous office experience is required.
  • Knowledge of special education procedures is preferred.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access software, and Microsoft Office 365.
  • Ability to build Excel spreadsheets, including advanced calculations.
  • Ability to build and maintain Microsoft Access databases.
  • Ability to use merge processes in Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technology.
  • Ability to communicate with public and school personnel, using tact and courtesy.
  • Ability to work without constant supervision or direction to meet a demanding work schedule.
  • Ability to prioritize and work with overlapping deadlines for critical task completion.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and maintain positive working relationships with fellow staff members to promote a learning and team approach.
  • Ability to partner with outside agencies to establish and maintain data processes.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of information.
  • Outstanding attendance and prior work record.
  • Use of proper grammar, spelling, and English usage.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 25 lbs.

 

Additional Duties:  Performs other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

 

Equipment:  This position will require the ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines.  Must always comply with OPSâ??s guidelines for equipment use. 

 

Travel:  Limited travel within the District may be required.

  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employeeâ??s supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.
  • Regular attendance is important.

Terms of Employment

This position is treated as a full-time non-exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment or teaching in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time, and the Teacher Contract. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.

Terms of employment are contingent upon:

  • A background check which demonstrates background is acceptable for the position sought and working with or around students.
  • Verification of U.S. Citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a tuberculosis skin test (if required by federal law for your position).
